Thinking on Circularity - Livia Lauber's installation, comprised of a group of unique seating furniture, vividly demonstrates the principles of Circular Design. The ultimate goal of a closed material loop is to minimize waste by prolonging the use of products and materials. In this case, old tractor tires serve as the starting material for the sun loungers, on which visitors can comfortably relax.
Those who don't want to just rest can learn more about the stories of the individual sun loungers and the characteristics of the circular economy. The experimental seating is not a finished product, but much more a means of illustrating the many possible applications of circular design principles. The conventional upholstery industry uses many foams and adhesives that make it impossible to reuse individual components. In contrast, Livia Lauber uses materials that can later be effortlessly separated from each other. A naturally produced, compostable organic cotton, for example, or a reclaimed parachute that used to float through the air.
Once your thirst for knowledge is satisfied and you find yourself lying comfortably on one of the circular loungers, your gaze will naturally drift upward to the sky and the boundless expanse of the universe. The installation encourages reflection and serves as a reminder that we, as humans, are part of a larger system. We share this planet with numerous fellow humans and other living beings, and it is our collective responsibility to care for Mother Earth.
